Date: April 24, 2010
Habitat: Woodlands. Prefers sandy soil in shrub form. All forms require full to partial shade.
Range: Across the Eastern United States, west into Texas. Not found in deserts.
Notes: Highly variable plant that can assume shrub or vine form. All parts of the plant are toxic to humans. The sap can cause severe skin irritation. Well established plants' wood appears to be hairy with fibrous roots. Leaves turn bright to dark red in fall.
